It’s been quite gray here in Chicago lately. I don’t know about you, but I am SO ready for spring… minus my spring allergies. Chris and had a very hectic, crazy, super productive weekend. Those are always fun right? We painted 2 walls in our apartment… so fun! We have been wanting to do this for years, actually since we moved here 4 years ago. So glad we finally painted those walls! One more thing off the check list. The makeover really gave our apartment a fresh new look, which was so invigorating that it inspired me to create a new spring drink for this so called spring weather we are supposed to be getting!

I have a thing for oranges. They are such a great fruit. I don’t care if it’s a kumquat, tangerine, blood orange, naval orange, or a lil’ cutie, I gobble them up. I had one blood orange and one cara cara orange hanging around all lonely and all, so I thought, what can I do with this? Well of course I could just eat them, but I wanted something special for these beauties.

So, since the hubby and I spent the weekend working our patooties off, I thought it would be nice to enjoy a cocktail. I took the juice of the blood and cara cara orange, threw in a little ginger ale (the kind with green tea, you know so I can feel like I am doing my body good) and a shot of vodka, and HELLO SPRING! This drink was everything I had hoped for and more. It had a nice but not over powering orange flavor. The bubbles from the ginger ale really make you feel like your enjoying something special, and the color from the blood orange make the drink a beautiful magenta springy rose color. Fabulous! Of course, this drink does not need the shot of vodka, it holds its own in a very special way. This would be a great drink to serve your girlfriends for a book club, luncheon, or BBQ. So here’s hoping spring is right around the corner!

Ps..How cute is the wine glass?? Thanks Standifer!

Blood Orange Spritzer
Makes 1 cocktail

Juice from ½ of a blood orange
Juice from ½ of a Cara cara orange
1 shot of vodka
Ginger Ale to top (I bought the kind that has green tea in it)
Ice cubes

Pick your glass of choice and put in a few ice cubes. Juice the oranges right into the glass. Add in 1 shot of vodka. Top off with ginger ale and stir until fully combined. Garnish with a slice of blood orange. I also garnished my drink with frozen pomegranate seeds… It added a nice pop of color!

*For those of you who are interested in what a Cara cara orange is it is simply a special variety of a juicy, low acid, seedless navel orange that is packed with more natural nutrition and minerals to power a healthy immune system. These types of oranges are available in grocery stores from December to April. If you haven’t tried a Cara cara orange, go out and buy one, they are so juicy and sweet they are sure to become your new favorite orange!
